Ayudante de Investigación Laboratorio

IMDEA Materials Institute is a public research organization founded in 2007 by Madrid’s regional government to carry out research of excellence in Material Science and Engineering by attracting talent from all over the world to work in an international and multidisciplinary environment. IMDEA Materials has grown rapidly since its foundation and currently includes more than 120 researchers from 22 nationalities and has become one of the leading research centers in materials in Europe which has received the María de Maeztu seal of excellence from the Spanish government. The research activities have been focused on the areas of materials for transport, energy, and health care and the Institute has state-of-the-art facilities for processing, characterization and simulation of advanced materials. More information can be found at

The candidate will be responsible for designing, constructing, fine-tuning and maintaining of electronics equipment to support the research activities of the project "Mechanical characterization and instrumentation" and performing in situ mechanical tests at different scales to study the mechanisms of deformation and fracture.

Some of the tasks and activities of the candidate will be:

  • Use of in-situ devices.
  • Design and control of high power AC systems.
  • Building of small equipment. Knowledge required: CAD design, PCB design (software and hardware), mounting the designed equipment.
  • Design and building of electronic equipment (sensors, gauges, power sources).
  • Maintenance of control systems: This task involves checking stepper motors and drivers, gearboxes, calibration of load cells and other sensors, checking temperature controllers and furnaces (resistive, induction, air blow).
  • Programming of control systems (Python, Arduino, Labview, Matlab): Being able to generate new software for devices' control or update the already developed ones.

Candidates should hold a Bachelor/Master in electrical/electronic, materials engineering and have experience in basic mechatronics, programming (Labview, C, C++ or Python, Arduino), microcontrollers, and design software (FreeCad, autocad, etc).

Basic knowledge of mechanics and materials selection will be positively evaluated.

Experience in working with electronic signals, oscilloscopes, etc. is mandatory.

Knowledge on electronic signal filtering, amplification of signals, control by PID, PWD, and safety measures (for the circuit and for the operator) are highly desirable.

Fluent oral and written English is required as this is the official language of the Institute.

Candidates must be:
