Application of machine learning techniques to manufacturing and materials science.

Ref. num. SMART-PD01

IMDEA Materials (Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies of Materials) is a non-profit, independent research institute, promoted by the Regional Government de Madrid (Spain), to carry out research in Materials Science and Engineering. IMDEA Materials Institute is committed to excellence in research by attracting talent from all over the world and to foster technology transfer to the industrial sector in a truly international environment. More information about the activities of the Institute can be found at:

The candidate will work in a project related with smart manufacturing of composite materials by injection/infusion techniques. The project will consist in a joint collaboration between Data Mining Research Group from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) and IMDEA Materials Institute. The research activities will be focussed on the application of simulation techniques (computational fluid mechanics) to the optimization of manufacturing process of composite materials by liquid moulding, including the creation of a physical demonstrator. The optimization aims to be carried out by applying Big Data techniques in the context of storage and management and machine learning approaches for the development of predictive models. The management and funding of the project belongs directly to IMDEA Materials Institute.

Candidates are desired to hold a PhD. Diploma related with Computational Materials Science & Machine Learning with excellent academic credentials and a strong commitment to develop an academic career in an international and multidisciplinary environment. Other PhD profiles with strong background in Material Sciences as well as Machine Learning/Big Data Analytics and management could be also considered.

Experience in computational fluid and solid mechanics, Big Data technologies, programming techniques (MatLab, Python, Java, R, etc.) as well as Data Analytics tools and frameworks (WEKA, SPSS Modeler, Knime, …) will be valued.

Fluent English (oral and written) is required.

Full time contract including social security coverage.
