Pre-doctoral research associate on the Design of Master Alloys for Sintered Steels (DMASS)

IMDEA Materials Institute is a public research organization founded in 2007 by Madrid’s regional government to carry out research of excellence in Material Science and Engineering by attracting talent from all over the world to work in an international and multidisciplinary environment. IMDEA Materials has grown rapidly since its foundation and currently includes more than 120 researchers from 22 nationalities and has become one of the leading research centers in materials in Europe which has received the María de Maeztu seal of excellence from the Spanish government. The research activities have been focused on the areas of materials for transport, energy, and health care and the Institute has state-of-the-art facilities for processing, characterization and simulation of advanced materials.

More information can be found at our webpage.

Description

The doctoral project is part of a coordinated project between AMES PM TECH, University Carlos III of Madrid and IMDEA Materials Institute. The candidate will work on the modelling, processing and characterization of alloys designed by the research partners. The research will be focused on the development of Master Alloys (MA) for their application in steels designed for the automotive industry. These MA powders will grant the iron-based powders the alloying elements that will modify their microstructure and strengthen their mechanical performance. An initial design of the MA compositions will be performed by thermodynamics (CALPHAD) modelling, followed by experimental validation of the designed alloys in terms of microstructure and mechanical behaviour of the final components formed by the MA and iron powders.

The candidate will acquire hands-on experience with state-of-the-art materials thermodynamical simulation, processing and characterization methods (e.g. Thermocalc for alloy design, arc melting, differential thermal analysis, electron microscopy, sample preparation and mechanical testing). He/She will gain expertise in several fields of high employability and experience in both fundamental and applied research in materials science and engineering and metallurgy, opening perspectives in both academia and industry.

Requirements
  • Candidate should hold an MSc in Materials Science, Metallurgy or a related field/discipline with excellent academic credentials and a strong commitment to developing an academic career in an international and multidisciplinary environment.
  • Solid background in the processing and characterization of metallic materials will be expected.
  • Fluent English (written and oral) is mandatory.
  • Previous experience in Thermodynamic simulation and CALPHAD-related methodologies will be highly appreciated and positively evaluated.

Conditions

Interested candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to ensure best consideration of their application. Screening of candidates will begin immediately. Short-listed candidates will be invited for an initial interview in person or via Zoom, even before the closing date.

The doctoral contract is for a duration of 36 months.

El contrato es parte del proyecto CPP2021-008682, financiado por MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 y por la Unión Europea-NextGenerationEU/PRTR

Applications are processed upon reception. The position might be closed once ten working days have passed since publication, so we encourage early application.

The working language of the Institute is English. Full command of the English language is required in all positions.
