IMDEA Materials Institute is a public research organization founded in 2007 by Madrid’s regional government to carry out research of excellence in Material Science and Engineering by attracting talent from all over the world to work in an international and multidisciplinary environment. IMDEA Materials has grown rapidly since its foundation and currently includes more than 120 researchers from 22 nationalities and has become one of the leading research centers in materials in Europe which has received the María de Maeztu seal of excellence from the Spanish government. The research activities have been focused on the areas of materials for transport, energy, and health care and the Institute has state-of-the-art facilities for processing, characterization and simulation of advanced materials.

Description

The purpose of this position is threefold: to communicate the work being done at the Institute to outside stakeholders (fellow research centres, government, potential future employees, the general public etc.) in a way that positions the Institute as a centre of reference in the field of materials science. Secondly, the role is also a component of the Institute’s mission of attracting talent of excellence, by highlighting the Institute’s position as a leading centre of employment in the field, and also by amplifying existing job opportunities. Finally, the role is also central to the internal communication of the Institute, ensuring that employees are aware and up to date on all institutional topics of relevance to them.

Main responsibilities:

  • Maintaining the Institute’s website updated (news, publications, activities etc.)
  • Writing and disseminating articles and press releases highlighting the ongoing research activities and projects in which IMDEA Materials is involved
  • Audiovisual and photographic production – event photography, project videos, interviews etc.
  • Social media managing – creating and managing content for the Institute’s social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and Facebook)
  • Taking the lead in the creation of communication plans/strategies for research projects at the regional, national and international levels
  • Relationship building with key stakeholders in the media (journalists, editors etc.) in order to facilitate the task of boosting the Institute’s visibility
  • Maintaining an ongoing relationship with the other IMDEA Institute’s as part of a cohesive communication ecosystem
  • Assisting researchers in communication related tasks for projects, conferences, events etc. where necessary

Requirements
  • Minimum 3 years of previous experience in similar role
  • Familiarity with managing social media accounts
  • Required experience in the production of articles for publication in either general media outlets of trade publications
  • Required experience in social media management, a desired track record of successful social media campaigns
  • Required previous experience in interacting with journalists and media outlets to promote favourable news coverage/interest
  • Desired previous experience in audiovisual production
  • Desired previous experience in a scientific/science-based environment (university, research centre, industry R&D etc.)
  • Required: degree in journalism or related communication field (or similar) and a master in corporate and institutional communication
  • Required: Native level (English or Spanish) & certified C1 level (English or Spanish)
