PhD candidate position 1 - Study of debinding and sintering in metal additive manufacturing by Metal Jetting

In Evaluation. It is not possible to apply anymore

IMDEA Materials Institute is a public research organization founded in 2007 by Madrid’s regional government to carry out research of excellence in Material Science and Engineering by attracting talent from all over the world to work in an international and multidisciplinary environment. IMDEA Materials has grown rapidly since its foundation and currently includes more than 120 researchers from 22 nationalities and has become one of the leading research centers in materials in Europe which has received the María de Maeztu seal of excellence from the Spanish government. The research activities have been focused on the areas of materials for transport, energy, and health care and the Institute has state-of-the-art facilities for processing, characterization and simulation of advanced materials.

More information can be found at our webpage.

Description

to carry out his/her doctoral research on the field of additive manufacturing of metals by Metal Jetting. The research will involve processing of austenitic stainless steels, microstructure characterization, as well as measurement of part quality properties, such as density, dimensional and mechanical properties. This project will lead to a PhD that will be defended at Carlos III University of Madrid.

The candidate will carry out his/her research work both at IMDEA Materials Institute and will collaborate closely with AMES Group (expert debinding and sintering company) for optimization of the debinding and sintering process of 3D printed metal parts, considering the application for mass production. Microstructural characterization will be used to determine part quality and extract useful parameters from data analysis of the employed characterization techniques. He/she will receive training in transversal skills and will have the opportunity to learn from the 3D printing market and disseminate his/her work at specialized forums.

Requirements

Requirements: Materials Science and Engineering Bachelor and/or Master with strong background in metallurgy and powder metallurgy. Experience in experimental materials processing, microstructure characterization, and mechanical testing will be recognized. Experience in programming and/or artificial intelligence will be valued. Fluent English (oral and written) is required.

Conditions

Conditions: 3-year contract with full social security coverage.

Starting date: December 2023 or as soon as a suitable candidate is found.

Applications are processed upon reception. The position might be closed once ten working days have passed since publication, so we encourage early application.

The working language of the Institute is English. Full command of the English language is required in all positions.
