SHORT DESCRIPTION

IMDEA Materials is seeking a Master in Informatics/Data Manager to work on the project Unlocking Innovation through FAIR Data Practices in Additive Manufacturing and X-ray Imaging at IMDEA Materials (FAIR-LAB). This project aims to promote the adoption of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data practices in metal additive manufacturing (AM) and X-ray computed tomography (XCT) characterization. It will create a standardized environment for integrating the AM production process with XCT characterization, facilitating more efficient workflows and comprehensive data management. The candidate will oversee developing the ecosystem (hardware and software) for data integration, management and consultation. The development of a custom data management APIs and frontend will ensure the organization, accessibility, and reusability of the data for future research, enhancing the field of metal AM and promoting open science.

The candidate is expected to have a solid background in informatics, Linux system and programming skills (Python, Java, etc.), as well as the ability to handle system administration, and a strong commitment to developing his activity in an international and multidisciplinary environment.

Master in Informatics/Data Manager

IMDEA Materials Institute is a public research organization founded in 2007 by Madrid’s regional government to carry out research of excellence in Material Science and Engineering by attracting talent from all over the world to work in an international and multidisciplinary environment. IMDEA Materials has grown rapidly since its foundation and currently includes more than 120 researchers from 22 nationalities and has become one of the leading research centers in materials in Europe which has received the María de Maeztu seal of excellence from the Spanish government. The research activities have been focused on the areas of materials for transport, energy, and health care and the Institute has state-of-the-art facilities for processing, characterization and simulation of advanced materials.

More information can be found at our webpage.

Description

In this project, the candidate will develop de ecosystem to uptake FAIR data principles in the laser additive manufacturing (LAM) production and X-ray computed tomography (XCT) characterization with the objective to extend it to other areas of the institute. In detail, the main research tasks include:

  • Design and assembly of necessary hardware for data storage and management
  • Develop standardized experimental protocols for metal LAM at IMDEA to enhance accessibility.
  • Integration (hardware and software) of AM devices into the FAIR workflow will involve developing algorithms for data extraction
  • Metadata incorporation. It will ensure a fully FAIR dataset, including material history and experimental parameters, software processing codes, software version, curated data, etc.)
  • Integration of different data into a database and/or data management software (e.g. openBIS or similar)
  • Creation of data consultation tool
  • Methodology development for digitalized comparison of geometric structures with the original CAD models
  • Systematic parametrization of relevant metrics for the specific application.
