Research position in algorithmic design and LPBF of NiTi-based medical devices

IMDEA Materials Institute is a public research organization founded in 2007 by Madrid’s regional government to carry out research of excellence in Material Science and Engineering by attracting talent from all over the world to work in an international and multidisciplinary environment. IMDEA Materials has grown rapidly since its foundation and currently includes more than 120 researchers from 22 nationalities and has become one of the leading research centers in materials in Europe which has received the María de Maeztu seal of excellence from the Spanish government. The research activities have been focused on the areas of materials for transport, energy, and health care and the Institute has state-of-the-art facilities for processing, characterization and simulation of advanced materials.

More information can be found at our webpage.

Description

The selected candidate will work with Prof. Dr. Andrés Díaz Lantada supporting the settlement of a new research line, contributing to the engineering design of innovative medical (cardiovascular and neurological) medical devices based on smart alloys. Together with research and development tasks linked to innovative design and manufacturing approaches (DfAM strategies and LPBF for NiTi), support to dissemination and communication activities, impact promotion and fundraising are expected. The candidate will work with the PI of the research line focusing on a new generation of medical devices enabled by advanced personalized, AI-based and algorithmic design methods together with high-performance AM tools.

Requirements

Experience of at least 4 years working in the medical industry, especially in connection with R&D projects linked to the design, prototyping, testing and certification of medical devices. Proficiency with algorithmic design tools (Rhino/Grasshopper + Python), computer-aided design resources (Siemens NX) and finite-element modelling of smart materials for medical devices, especially NiTi alloys, is required. Experience with laser powder bed fusion of NiTi alloys is also necessary. Evaluation will be based on 1) CV, 2) motivation letter, 3) research portfolio highlighting experience in DfAM and LPBF, and 4) selection of up to 5 publications. Candidates not providing the required documentation (points 1-4) will be automatically discarded.

Conditions

International working environment within a team of multidisciplinary researchers focused on transforming healthcare through materials research. Competitive salary based on fulfilment of requirements and according to IMDEA Materials standards. Start date: January 1st 2026.

Applications are processed upon reception. The position might be closed once ten working days have passed since publication, so we encourage early application.

The working language of the Institute is English. Full command of the English language is required in all positions.
