SHORT DESCRIPTION

IMDEA Materials Institute invites applications from highly motivated candidates for a Research Support possition, who will support the research activities carried out within the battery materials and electrochemistry group. The role involves the preparation of materials and electrodes, assembly and testing of electrochemical cells, operation of laboratory equipment, data collection and analysis, and general laboratory maintenance. The successful candidate will work closely with researchers and contribute to ongoing projects related to energy storage technologies.

IMDEA Materials Institute is a public research organization founded in 2007 by Madrid’s regional government to carry out research of excellence in Material Science and Engineering by attracting talent from all over the world to work in an international and multidisciplinary environment. IMDEA Materials has grown rapidly since its foundation and currently includes more than 120 researchers from 22 nationalities and has become one of the leading research centers in materials in Europe which has received the María de Maeztu seal of excellence from the Spanish government. The research activities have been focused on the areas of materials for transport, energy, and health care and the Institute has state-of-the-art facilities for processing, characterization and simulation of advanced materials.

Description

The selected candidate will carry out the following tasks:

  • Preparation of electrode slurries and coating of electrodes.
  • Assembly of electrochemical cells (coin cells, Swagelok cells, etc.).
  • Electrochemical testing, including galvanostatic cycling and impedance measurements.
  • Handling and characterization of battery materials.
  • Collection, processing, and reporting of experimental data.
  • Maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.
  • Management of laboratory consumables and materials inventory.
  • Compliance with laboratory safety procedures and quality standards.
  • Support for research projects and collaboration with other team members.

Requirements

Education:

  • Higher vocational training (FP) in Laboratory, Chemistry, or related field, or a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or similar.

Experience:

  • Hands-on laboratory experience in academic or industrial environments.
  • Practical experience with electrochemical techniques, including CV, LSV, chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry, and EIS.
  • Experience in battery electrical testing and operation of battery cyclers.
  • Experience in the preparation of electrolytes and solutions.
  • Experience in recording, processing, and analyzing experimental data.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.

Languages:

  • Fluent English, both written and spoken.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with gloveboxes.
  • Experience assembling electrochemical cells, including coin cells, Swagelok cells, and pouch cells.
  • Previous experience in research institutions, R&D laboratories, or battery-related projects.
  • Experience with data analysis and graphing software (e.g., Origin).

  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and international environment.
  • Initiative, flexibility, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong teamwork and communication abilities.

Conditions

- Full-time contract for 12 months.

- Availability to start in July 2026.
